Nikwax TX Direct Spray 500ml Water Proofer for Wet Weather Fabrics £13.00
Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On - 500ml Spray Bottle
Adds Durable Water Repellency, revives breathability and maintains internal wicking properties.
Anyone who is active outside in damp or wet conditions will benefit from breathable waterproof clothing. Whether you’re a mountaineer, cyclist, dog walker, or you work outside as a farmer or surveyor, you will need good waterproof outerwear to keep us dry. However, a good waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapour to pass through it, or 'breathe'; otherwise our sweat cannot evaporate, causing us to overheat and get wet from condensation. Additionally, if the outer fabric of your garment absorbs water and ‘wets out’ its breathability will be reduced, causing you to feel clammy and wet.
A durable water-repellent (DWR) finish is applied to the outermost surface of waterproof/breathable clothing and equipment during manufacture. It prevents the fabric from absorbing moisture by making water bead up and roll off. This minimizes condensation forming within and maximizes breathability. However, the DWR finish is not permanent and needs to be maintained to optimize performance. Dirt will also attract water and reduce the beading-up of droplets on the fabric's surface.
Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On is a safe product to use on breathable waterproof items with wicking linings, or those that can’t be machine washed. It can be applied to the outer face fabric of waterproof clothing, providing Durable Water Repellency (DWR) without compromising internal wicking properties, whilst maintaining breathability, keeping you dry and comfortable. Safe for use on Gore-Tex®, Sympatex®, Entrant®, Ultrex®, and TriplePoint® fabrics.
* Never use liquid detergents or fabric softeners. Wash the garment in Nikwax Tech Wash non-detergent soap. Detergents can leave water-attractive residues that will not rinse out.
Your raingear could be soaking up water just because it is dirty. First, try cleaning them with Nikwax Tech Wash, and if they are fairly new, or recently re-waterproofed with Nikwax Cotton Proof, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will be revitalised just from cleaning.
Once the garment has been thoroughly worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax TX.Direct:
For best results remove all non-washable parts and always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash in a separate wash cycle. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions.
Use gloves (to avoid waterproofing your hands!).
Nikwax TX.Direct treated clothing needs no heat to develop Durable Water Repellency (DWR), so it is not necessary to use a tumble drier for best results. As garments with taped seams get older the tape adhesion weakens, becoming more fragile and susceptible to heat, so it is best to avoid tumble drying.
Air dry or tumble dry on a low setting if care label allows.
*Faulty taped seams sometimes become detached on old or worn garments. They can be re-stuck using a proprietary clear glue after waterproofing and drying.
Nikwax Product Ethics:
Nikwax takes great care to minimise the effect of Nikwax waterproofing products on the environment and on you, the consumer.
Breathable waterproof garments are most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability.
Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your jacket must be maintained to ensure comfort. It will eventually wear off and need to be renewed with Nikwax TX.Direct.

Used this product over several days, i.e. left sleeve one day, right sleeve next day, after padding out the sleeves with dusters. Right front, next day etc., and so on. Best not to attempt to spray all of jacket in one go as it clearly states that the item has to be laid flat.

The old jacket was a little less waterproof during the last walk. Ordered some Nikwax TX direct and it did the job
