Whether you’re a mountaineer, cyclist, dog walker, or you work outside as a farmer or surveyor, you will need good waterproof footwear to keep you dry. Leather is hardwearing, breathable and provides a high level of support, making it an ideal material for footwear construction. During leather production, tanning agents are added to maintain the structure of leather and prevent microbial growth. If leather becomes wet its breathability will be reduced, leading to wet feet from condensation. Also, when leather absorbs water, tanning agents are lost.

Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather has been specifically designed and optimised for smooth leather footwear, providing instant Durable Water Repellency (DWR), stopping leather from absorbing water and ‘wetting out’ while maintaining breathability. It also replenishes tanning agents to maintain the support of leather footwear without over-softening. You don’t need to wait for your footwear to dry before application, it can be used on either wet or dry leather.

Additionally, Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather black restores colour and reduces scuff and abrasion marks. It has been specifically designed and optimised for black smooth leather footwear.

* Never use liquid detergents or fabric softeners. Wash Nubuck & Suede footwear in Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel non-detergent soap. Detergents can leave water-attractive residues that will not rinse out.

How to use Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather:

Your footwear could be soaking up water just because they are dirty. First, try cleaning them with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel, and if they are fairly new, or recently re-waterproofed with Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will be revitalised just from cleaning.

Once footwear have been thoroughly used, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather:

• Hand Wash

For best results always clean footwear first with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel. No need to dry footwear before waterproofing. Shake well before use. Follow care label instructions.

1. Brush off dirt with Nikwax Suede Brush or a damp cloth and clean using Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel.
2. Shake well before use.
3. Rub the wax thoroughly into wet or dry clean leather, using either the sponge applicator or your fingers, paying special attention to seams. *
4. Remove any excess with a cloth and buff to a shine.
5. Always allow footwear to dry naturally:

• Leave footwear to dry at room temperature. 
• Paper can be stuffed into the toes to absorb excess moisture, this should be replaced when wet.
• Keep footwear away from fires and radiators, drying too quickly can crack leather and cause bonded soles to peel.

Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather leaves a flexible water repellent treatment on individual fibres of fabric and leather. This allows moisture vapour to pass through, maintaining breathability and keeping your feet dry.
To maintain waterproofing always clean with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel. Do not use detergents.

Using the right cleaning product is as important as using the right waterproofing product. Conventional detergents leave behind a thin water-absorbent film on materials, which masks their Durable Water Repellency (DWR).
