The Expedition S is an advanced level mirror sighting compass primarily used by rescue workers and outdoor enthusiasts who crave top level equipment. It contains everything you need in a compass and has added functionality for GPS.

The Silva Expedition S features easy-handling Dryflex™ housing, silicon rubber feet for precision map work, detachable safety-release lanyards, night-enabling luminous markings, magnifying lens, map-measuring scales in mm or inches, 1:25,000, 1:50,000 and GPS scales – plus built-in adjusters for magnetic declination (including permanent local adjustment).

The Expedition S can also map-measure 1:40,000 and it comes with a clinometer for measuring slope angle and 45-degree angle assistance on the mirror-sighting function. The mirror-sighting function is perfect when determining direction over longer distances.

The slope card is great for detecting avalanche risk and to determine how challenging your journey will be. The scale lanyard has two scales on it; 1:25, and 1:50, which facilitates to measure the distance of your hike. Silva 1-2-3 System:

  1. Place your compass on the map and use the baseline to make a straight line between your current position and your destination. Make sure Direction of Travel arrow points towards your destination.
  2. Turn the compass housing until the red part of the north/south arrow is parallel with the map meridians and points north on the map.
  3. Lift your compass from the map and hold it horizontally in your hand. Turn yourself and the compass until the red end of the needle is inside the red north/ south arrow. Now the direction of travel arrow will point towards your destination. Take a landmark and start moving. Enjoy!
  4. NOTE: If using a mirror-sighting compass: angle the mirror/lid approximately 45 degrees towards yourself and hold with straight arm out in front of you. Now, while looking in the mirror to see that the needle aligns with the red/black N/S arrow, sight above the mirror (using the sight) towards an object in the field in line with the direction of travel
